Chapter 11

“What do you want for lunch?” you asked Nancy as the three of you walked the halls towards the building exit.

“Panera! I want a sandwich or something.”

“So, you gotta get the most expensive sandwich you can think of?” you said.

“My credit card knows no limits,” she answered with a soft giggle.

“French fries! French fries! French fries!” you heard being chanted somewhere down the hall. You looked around as your ears led you through all of the chattering and shouting of others and more minor noises and sounds from lockers and squeaking sneakers against the tiles. “Come on, Feliks. You gotta chant and believe! French fries! French fries!”

“W-where are you going?” Tyler asked as him and Nancy hurried along behind you down the halls.

When you found the owner of the voice you tracked down, you nudged their shoulder.

The small girl jumped and quickly turned around with her arms up to block her face. She dropped her hands to her sides and sucked her teeth when she saw it was you and your friends.

“The fuck?” she said.

“I would have just called your name, but then I remembered what happened last time,” you said.

She frowned up as she just stared at you for a second. She slid over behind Feliks then pushed him toward you. “Here,” she said. “You can have him for lunch.”

You sighed. “That’s not what I’m here for.”

You looked over to Feliks. “I mean, if you want, we can eat lunch together.”

He held up his hands. “I just wanted some fries, man.”

“I came over because I still have questions, and it’s lunch, so you have time to answer me now,” you said to Dyah.

She let out a dramatic groan and tossed her head back. “Oh, my god. Why? Can’t you just be confused and happy?”

You shook your head. “Nah, not really.”

“Whatever. Can you ask your questions on the way to the lunchroom?”

“Alright.”

“Wait!” Nancy said. “You’re eating lunch in the lunchroom?”

“Oh, sorry guys,” you said to her. “I guess you’ll have to eat without me.”

Dyah grinned to the two and took a step closer to them. “Unless you want to come and be friends with us too,” she sang. “I promise we’ll try real hard not to kill ya.”

Tyler and Nancy held each other’s hands as Dyah chuckled at them.

Nancy took in a breath and closed her eyes. “A-alright.”

Dyah’s expression dropped. “Wait, what?”

Tyler shook Nancy. “P-please don’t leave me too, Nana! I need you to pay for my lunch!”

Nancy turned her head away from him and said, “I’m so sorry, Tyler, but this might be my only chance to find out what happened to Dyah.”

Dyah looked to Nancy with her head crooked to the side some. “The fuck you talking about, freckles?” She shook her head and waved one of her hands before Nancy could answer. “Later. I want fries right now.” She hooked her arm around Feliks and started back down the hall. You and your friends went after the two. “Questions. Go.”

“Oh, uh. Feliks calls you his older sister,” you said.

She looked up to Feliks. “You call me your sister?”

He nodded.

“So, you’re not related?” you asked.

“Nah, but I guess ‘big sister’ is a fitting title,” she said.

“You’re uh…friends, then?” you said.

“Yeah. Yeah.”

“If you’re just friends, then why do you care so much about him talking to other people?”

She glanced at you with a bored look. “Why do you think? Because I don’t want him in the news.”

“He’s not that bad,” you said.

She snickered and said, “I don’t know what kind of fucked up perception you got on things, but he bites people.”

You turned your head as your eyes went to the floors. You placed your hands in your pockets as you said, “I-it’s not like he hurt her.”

“Yeah, well, you’re not the one who had to apologize and beg her not to tell the principal.”

“That’s what I’m saying,” you said. “You didn’t have to do all that.”

Dyah stopped in her tracks. Everyone else slowed and came to a halt as well. She quietly stared at you. Her eyes went off to Nancy and Tyler for a quick second before coming back to you. “…If one of your friends killed someone, would you want somebody going to the police about it?”

You didn’t have a response for a moment, but the two of you held eye contact the entire time. Teens rushed around you all— some peeking back and mumbling to their friends as your group stood unmoving in the middle of the hall.

You nodded a bit. “I understand…I’m sorry. I did know y—”

Dyah suddenly began to laugh. “You funny, bruh!” she said. She nudged her head against Feliks’ arm like a puppy as she wrapped one of her arms around his waist and started back walking.

“Is we done with the questions yet or what?” She asked you.

“Uhm…” You let her take the lead to the lunchroom again and watched her walk, cuddled up to Feliks’ side with her head against his chest. His hand sat on top of her head and moved back and forth in her dreads. They seemed comfortable with one another.

“Yesterday,” you began, “That blonde woman was Feliks’ mom, right?”

“Yeah,” she answered.

“Why didn’t you want me to come inside?”

“Uhh…Cause I ain’t think you’d want to, for real, for real.”

“What do you mean?”

She turned her head to you. “Like, his mom can be…talkative.” She faced forward again. “ I ain’t want you going into it too ‘ill-prepared,’ I should say. She might come at you with more energy than you’d expect. I just wanted to let you know in advance.”

When you made it to the lunchroom, it was packed with students and faculty. The noise seemed to be far more apparent in there than out in the halls. Many different scents rushed to your nose but were overpowered by the smell of tomato sauce and pork.

Nancy covered her nose and turned her head toward the wall as you headed for the line.

“You could probably still make it to Panera if you leave now,” you told her.

She shook her head. “I-it’s fine. I can go without lunch. I’ll just binge when I get home.”

“It’s pizza day!” Dyah cheered and took in a big sniff of the heavy air. She unhanded Feliks to clasp her hands together as she released a long exhale. “You can’t get any better than those thin, square slices of wonder!”

“Y-you always eat lunch in the lunchroom?” Nancy said to Dyah.

“Huh? Where the hell else are you going to eat lunch at school?” Dyah said with a snicker.

“Don’t you drive to school? You could just pick up some food.”

She shrugged as she said, “But school lunch free, tho. Like…The fuck? I ain’t bout to spend twenty-five dollars a week for food when I can get it for free.”

Nancy placed a hand on Dyah’s arm as she looked at her with sad eyes. “Please let me buy you lunch Monday.”

Dyah took a step to the side. “…You weird, freckles.”

Nancy moved both of her hands to her chest. “I-I’m…I’m weird? She called me weird? I-I don’t…”

You found yourself laughing with Dyah.

“Aww, shit! It must hurt having the school psycho-sitter call you weird, huh?” she said.

You elbowed Feliks and said, “You remember when you called me weird at the park?”

He nodded.

“I don’t know if I’m more upset over you calling me weird or freckles, like you don’t even know my name.”

“I don’t think you ever mentioned it,” she said.

“You seriously don’t remember me? We were best friends!” Nancy shouted to her as she balled up her fists and glared at Dyah. “How fucking dare you! After I was so worried about you all these years! You can’t even bother to remember my fucking name?”

“Y-yo, chill!” Dyah said as she stepped closer to Feliks. She pointed her thumb over to you.  “I don’t even remember her name, and I know Feliks told it to me at least five times.”

You looked to her. “Wait, seriously?”

“My memory is total shit, and I’m horrible with names.”

Nancy crossed her arms and huffed. “Of course, that would be your excuse,” she said as she leaned against the wall and waited for the line to move.

“Aww, freckles. Come on. Don’t be mad, frecks.”

“S-stop calling me that!”

“That’s actually kind of a cute nickname,” Tyler said with a chuckle.

“Shut up, Tyler! You’re supposed to be defending me!” Nancy argued at him. “Ain’t it supposed to be your job as my older cousin?”

You covered the side of your mouth as you spoke to Dyah, but talked loud enough for Nancy to hear. “Nancy just really missed you. She talked about how awesome and cool she thought you were in school.”

“S-shut up!” Nancy debated as her face grew red. “Seriously, shut up!”

“Aww, shucks. I feel real bad about not remembering,” Dyah said. “You called her Nancy? My fault, Nancy, but I don’t really remember there ever being a time I had any friends, though.”

“Really?” you said.

“French fries!” Dyah yelled and grabbed a tray before racing off to the long awaited food line to pile her plate.
---

After fixing your styrofoam tray with a modest amount of food, you and your friends followed Dyah and Feliks to a lunch table.

“Wow,” Dyah said and looked over to Feliks who sat next to her. “Our table’s never been so cramped before, huh?”

He shook his head, and she snickered before tossing a fry into her mouth. Her eyes went to you as she chewed with a wide smile across her face. “Did you need something else?”

You sat across the table, in front of Feliks. Nancy sat beside you, and Tyler, next to her.

“Uh…” You rested your elbow on the table and leaned against your hand as you thought. “When did you met Feliks?”

“Aww, now you just making stuff up to ask about,” she said and rolled her eyes.

“No, I’m seriously curious! I want to know, and Feliks would probably just say he’s not sure if he’s ‘allowed’ to tell me. Oh, yeah, and what’s with that? Him being allowed to do certain things.”

“Which question am I answering?”

You shrugged and grabbed a fry off of your plate. “Both of them, but I guess the ‘not allowed’ thing first.”

“Hmm…” Dyah leaned back and turned her head up toward the ceiling. “Uhh…” She came back to her food and picked up her pizza as she said, “I don’t think I’m allowed to talk about that, actually.”

You sucked your teeth. “So you do it too?”

“I met Feliks in eighth-grade,” Dyah said and bite her pizza.

You waited for her to finish chewing so she’d at least elaborate on that story.

She took another bite of her pizza.

“And?” you hinted.

She stopped and just stared at you for a moment. “…And what?”

“That’s all you’re going to tell me about it?”

“It wasn’t that magical of an event. What else do you want?”

“Did you go to the same school? Were you in the same class? Did you just move in next door during the school year?”

“Jesus, you really love questions, don’t you? My goodness!”

“I like details, yes,” you said. “If you two weren’t so bland with your answers, then maybe I wouldn’t have to ask so many questions. Ever think of that?”

“Alright. Okay. Geez. He transfered to the school I was going to at the time and sat next to me…That’s it.”

You sucked your teeth. “Lame!”

She narrowed her eyes at you as she twisted open the top of her juice. “You a needy-ass woman, I swear. That’s what happened! We just so happened to both be ‘that quiet weird kid.’”

“So, you were already crazy before you met Feliks?” you asked.

“I’m not…!” She paused and thought for a second. She straightened her expression before trying again. “I’m not crazy.”

“Really, now,” you said in a monotone drawl as you stared at her with half-lidded eyes.

“I’m perfectly fine and stable when need be. I just don’t like people.”

“Uh-huh.”

“I’m fine!” she repeated after your nonchalant response. “If anything, I’m just surrounded by crazy people. I don’t t—” She gasped then a huge smile replaced the annoyed look on her face as she looked past you. You turned around in your seat as she shouted, “Tori-kun!”

And yes, the dark haired brunette boy was making his way over. He seemed to be too far to hear Dyah’s excited call to him. His attention was more so focused on you.

“Hey, (name),” he said once he made it over. His eyes went to your two friends. “It’s strange seeing you three in the lunch room.”

“Neh. Neh. To-ri!” Dyah sang in a squeaky, childish tone of voice. “Tori-kun!”

Toris smiled to her. “Hey, Dyah.”

“A-ah!” Dyah threw herself back in her seat as she spread her hands out against her chest. She giggled as she sat back up and covered her face. “Senpai noticed me!”

You blinked a few times as you watched her, then turned your attention to Toris who seemed unfazed by her behavior.

“Uh…So, you know each other?” you asked.

“Of course,” Dyah said. “Tori-kun knows everybody.”

Toris laughed a bit and rubbed his head. “Well, I wouldn’t say I know everybody.”

You glanced toward Feliks. His eyes seemed glued to Toris. You thought it was a little strange, but then again, Feliks does seem to really like staring at people.

“So, uh, did you want something?” you asked Toris.

His sights dropped to the floor as he fiddled with his hands. “Oh, no. Not really. Sorry. I just saw you over here and thought I’d say hi.”

You looked down as well, being a bit embarrassed. After what happened during first-period, you weren’t sure if he’d even want to try talking to you anymore.

“So, are you guys…friends?” Toris asked. “You and Dyah, I mean.”

“I don’t have friends,” Dyah said.

“Don’t say that,” you said to her, but then turned to Toris. “Yes, we’re all friends.”

“That’s nice,” he said.

“You wanna come sit and be friends with us too, Tori-kun?”

“Sorry, I’m already sitting somewhere else. Next time, though! I gotta go.”

Toris grazed his fingertips against your arm to get your attention. “I’ll see you later?”

You blushed from the gentle look on his face as he showed you a small half smile.

“Y-yeah. Tomorrow, for sure.”

“Great.” He waved to the rest of the table as he began to walk off. “Bye, guys.”

Both Tyler and Nancy slammed their hands against the table as they narrowed their eyes at Dyah, making the small girl jump and put up her arms, defensively.

“Alright, how do you know Toris?” Tyler asked.

“Details,” Nancy added.

“Goodness! And people call us scary!” Dyah said and moved closer to Feliks’ side.

“We can get much scarier,” Nancy said.

“’Tori-kun?’” Tyler air quoted. “Explain. Now.”

“S-stop glaring at me!” Dyah whined into Feliks’ arm. The blonde just continued to eat, but watched Dyah as she nodded her face against him.

You hit Nancy’s arm. “You guys, chill out! She won’t tell you anything if you keep looking at her like that.”

“Were you two dating?” Nancy asked through gritted teeth.

“What? Gross!” Dyah objected and scrunched up her nose in disgust. “I fucking hate Toris! He's an asshole, and I wish he died!"

“What?" you said with a confused look. "But…you were just giggling and blushing over him a couple of seconds ago."

Dyah rolled her eyes and let out a big breath as she shrugged and said, "Well, duh!"

You and your friends blinked a few times and waited, but she didn't say anything else after that.

"…And you're definitely not crazy," you said.

"Why I gotta be crazy just because I don't like Toris?"

"Well, first off, you didn't give any reasons."

"Why I always gotta have reasons with you people?" Dyah shouted as she threw her hands up. "He's just a horrible human being, and I fucking hate horrible people!"

“How is he such a ‘horrible human being,’ then?” Nancy asked.

Dyah crossed her arms. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

“So, you don’t know,” you concluded.

“I know what I know, and I know Toris is a complete dick in pussy's clothing!”

“That is…" You sighed. "That is not how that goes.”

“How do you even know him, anyway?” Tyler asked.

Dyah rubbed her chin and stared at her plate. “Uhm…I guess you could say we’re like, cousins.”

“Cousins?” you and your friends exclaimed.

Tyler shook his head before pointing to her. “So you’re telling me you’re related to Toris?”

“Not by blood or anything. He claims my uncle as his dad.”

“Oh! So your uncle is his step-dad,” you guessed.

She shrugged. “Sure.”

“Are you ever certain of anything?” you asked with heavy sarcasm in your voice.

“Uh…I guess. Maybe. Sometimes. I don’t know.”

You rolled your eyes.

“How do you know Toris?” Feliks asked you.

“Huh? Oh, uhm.” You straightened up a little and looked off to the side when you caught Feliks’ voice. He hasn’t said anything since lunch started, so it caught you off guard when he finally said something. “You know. I see him around.”

“He has the biggest crush on (name),” Nancy said.

Your cheeks burned as you punched her arm. “S-shut up! It’s not like that!”

Both Dyah and Feliks were quiet with blank expressions.

“I-it’s not like that,” you repeated to get your point across to the two.

“Well, he likes you enough to ask you out,” Tyler reasoned.

“It’s not a date,” you mumbled. “All I’m doing is talking to him when we get there.”

“Get where?” Feliks asked.

Your eyes went over to him after hearing his question. “Oh, the party he’s having Saturday. Are you guys going?”

Dyah broke into hysterical laughter. “You are so fucking funny! Are me and Feliks going to a high school party? Ha!”

“You should come,” you said. “It’ll be fun.”

“Yeah, cause everybody would love to see the psychopath and his babysitter show up to the house party,” Dyah snickered. “No, thank y—”

“We’ll go,” Feliks said.

“Really?” you asked as a smile grew on your face.

Dyah furrowed her brows as she said to Feliks, “The fuck, we are!”

“If Feliks wants to go, you should let him go,” you told her. “If you don’t want to, I could just take him.”

She didn’t answer you and only increased the intensity of her staring at Feliks. He seemed to ignore her presence altogether.

“…Fine. We’ll go then,” she concluded then turned back to her food as she mumbled, “Weirdo.”
We learned a lot today after talking to Dyah, haven't we?

What? She didn't explain shit? Well, fuck! What do you want from me? Answers? Pfft! This ain't that kind of series, baby!

I wish I was funny again...

Oh! And this is the last chapter I have finished, so don't be surprised if this is the last update you get for this series in like...the next three years or something, bro.
